Welcome to The Learn Page, Oportus' monthly update, where I'll be sharing something new I've learned (or re-learned!) with you. I will also use it to let you know what training, events and resources are coming up at Oportus. However, let me be clear: this is not going to be a place where I'll be sending out freebies, time limited offers or other hard sell gimmicks in a bid to lure potential customers; it's just where I'll share what I'm learning and developing, some of which I believe will be of help to others.

As we head into 2022 with some possible glimmers of hope that the unsettledness of the last two years might at last be beginning to ease, it seems a fitting time to send Oportus out into the world, and launch this newspage.

The picture above was taken outside my front door and seems to perfectly sum up how it feels after a typically wild winter on the west coast of Ireland. The days are beginning to get longer, birds are starting to sing in the mornings and buds starting to appear.

Oportus is a business born in lockdown. Ireland is only now - after almost two years of severe restrictions - considering lifting the majority of restrictions as the fourth wave of the virus may have reached its peak. I've been a bit stuck, but to open the door to this opportunity, learning is the key...

What have I learned?

That the "perfect moment" is now! I've spent a lot of my life waiting for all the conditions to be exactly right and risk-free before doing things and as a result, let opportunity pass me by. It could be said that this is not the right time to be starting a new venture; why not wait until we can be sure COVID restrictions are going to continue being lifted? Why not wait until Spring, when the weather's better? Why not wait until we hear that people are getting out and about a bit more?

And my response is...because now is what I have to work with; tomorrow may be better or it may be worse in terms of being "the right moment". If tomorrow turns out to have been a better day to start than today, I can adjust and will have learned; if it turns out worse, I'll be glad I stepped out today. But if I don't step out, I'll never know!

What about you? Is there something you've been thinking about but keep putting off? Why? Or maybe you are doing or learning something new.

Either way, please get in contact on the form below if you have any thoughts or questions - I'd love to hear from you!

Until next time, let's keep learning...
